Genetics

Mendel's Experiments with Pea Plants

Picture
What you need to know about Mendel:
  • He is the founding father of genetics
  • He was an European monk who worked in the monastery garden
  • He did experiments on pea plants in order to discover rules about heredity and genetics
  • He crossed purebred plants (plants that always produce offspring with the same form of a trait as the parent) in order to learn more about why offspring often look similar to their parents
  • He discovered that organisms had 'factors' which we now call genes (genotype) that determine certain traits or physical characteristics (the phenotype)
  • He learned that genes have many forms, called alleles
  • He discovered that some alleles are always shown when present, while others can be masked
  • The alleles that are always shown are called dominant
  • The alleles that can be masked are called recessive
  • Every gene has two alleles, one from the father and one from the mother
