Punnett Squares

Picture
Punnett squares are a valuable tool in Genetics!

  • They can help you predict the probability of the type of offspring a given couple will have.
  • Using them you can predict the genotype and phenotype
  • Reminders:
  • Homozygous means 2 of the same alleles (aka BB, or bb)
  • Heterozygous means 2 different alleles (aka Bb)
  • Probabilities are expressed in either ratios or percentages
  • Genotype means their specific alleles... given a punnet square you should be able to state the ratio for the homozygous dominant gene, heterozygous gene, and homozygous recessive gene. Ex. for the punnett square next to you, the ratio is: 1:2:1.....1 BB, 2 Bb, and 1 bb. The percentages are 25% BB, 50% Bb, and 25% bb
  • Phenotype means their physical appearance.....given a punnet square you should be able to state the ratio for the different phenotypes. Ex. the above punnet square has a ratio of 3:1 for the phenotypes being 3 purple to every 1 white. Where as the percentages are 75% purple to 25% white.
